“Hello.” His voice rang through the receiver. Peg froze up. It seemed like it had only been hours since she’d seen him last. It had been months for him. He probably moved on. Forgot about her. Just kept the notches on his bedpost. No words came out of her mouth. She…
Hearing his voice caused Peg to lose her breath. She knew her voice sounded nothing like it used to. It was rusty, hoarse, and unused. She tried to clear her throat and get it back to what Jack would recognize. Finally, after another deep breath, she spoke again. “Jack. It’s Peg. I know you won’t believe me, and I know that. But please, just give it a chance. I promise you probably think I just walked out of your life. But the story is a lot more complicated than that. If you give me the chance to tell it.” The silence on the other end was deafening. Peg held her breath as she tried to decode it. She wondered what face he was making. If he was even still on the phone. He could have thought it was a cruel joke and hung up. “Jack?” Her voice cracked a bit.
